Ukiah Winter Shelter Closed For The Season

May 1, 2018 -- The Ukiah Winter Shelter closed on Monday, April 30.  On Friday afternoon, I went by to talk with guests about what they'll do next. I found a wide range of stories, from the man who found a place and a job, to another who is disabled and can't find either. One woman talked about how she is "no stranger to travel," and said that she always tries to make sure she is around people who are aware of her health conditions. Another man said he'd gotten his life together, thanks to services provided at the shelter.

The shelter was operated through the winter months by Redwood Community Services (RCS), a local non-profit which purchased the building at 1045 South State Street and now plans to remodel it. The City of Ukiah approved it as a day-use facility for homeless people, offering services ranging from case management to laundry and showers. RCS plans to start day use services in October, then operate the building as a winter homeless shelter again, starting in November.
