May 18, 2018 — A few weeks ago, I went the emergency winter shelter in Ukiah to talk to people about what they planned to do next, now that the shelter is closed for the season. I met a couple of high school seniors who are not homeless, but who wanted to do something to alleviate the stigma surrounding people who are.
Jazmin Ramirez and Marcela Rodriguez handed out disposable cameras to homeless people at the shelter and at Plowshares, and asked people to take pictures of their daily lives. Then the students developed two sets of the pictures, and gave one set to the people who took them. They put together a display with the other set, and made a presentation to their civic engagement class. Let’s find out what they learned, and what they shared with their classmates.
