Maps & Legends tonight, Sept. 14, 7-9 pm: “Help!” –-Cries for help, and the people who heard them
Perhaps it is redundant to title a musical program “Help!” Music itself is already inherently helpful the minute it hits our eardrums, however mundane or inane the topic seems. We instinctively turn to our favorite songs when in need of succor, inspiration, and encouragement. But lately some of us have been having it extra-bad, and all of us have found ourselves at the end of one proverbial rope or another at some point. This evening’s program is for them. The first hour will feature various musical cries for help, including Warren Zevon, The Beach Boys, PJ Harvey, and that grand dramatist of rock & roll, James Brown. In the second hour, we’ll hear music that reminds us we are not alone, including songs from Coldplay, The Cowboy Junkies, and Bill Withers. We’ll contemplate how a singer can get up in front of thousands of people and ask them, “What would you do if I sang out of tune?” simultaneously posing and resolving his conundrum in the act of performance. We’ll hear blues, punk, surf-rock, mumblecore, Motown, and more.
