Tonight, Dec. 21, 7 to 9 pm on Maps & Legends Radio: "Apocalypses Now?" Great change is often accompanied by great anxiety. In a time of great turmoil, violence and climate crisis, many have turned to projections from the Mayan calendar to proclaim an end-of-the-world scenario. However, I've heard some wise people say that nothing ends—it just changes into something else. Perhaps what's ending is our certainties, our habits, our customs—the end of the world as we know it. That's the title of a popular song by R.E.M., and we'll take it as our starting point for tonight's show. We'll hear surprisingly upbeat songs on the topic--the full title of R.E.M.'s song is: "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)"—as well as moody, fearful, and angry songs. In the second hour, we'll take a look at prophecies and prophetic voices, before launching into songs about fresh beginnings and predictions of renewal and hope. Hear music from six decades of rock and roll, including Arcade Fire, Buddy Holly, U2, Timbuk 3, and more.
