Mary Aigner's Departure

Mary Aigner, Program Director for KZYX&Z, recently announced that she has decided it is time, after 22 years, to hand over the reins. She has some interesting opportunities that she wishes to explore, though she will continue to be involved with the radio station, including hosting her "Dead Air" program. As she told the volunteer programmers and her friends:

"It's been a great pleasure and an honor to work here, and I can't think of a more interesting or gratifying place to work. I'm constantly amazed by your talent, passion, and commitment to the cause of creating the best community radio we can, in service of the people of Mendocino County."

We wish Mary great success in her future endeavors. We will miss her.

Tune in to WILDOAK LIVING, the radio program about living sustainably and building community
in Mendocino County and beyond.

On Monday, March 17, at 9:00 AM Pacific Time:

Envisioning the future of our libraries - Community Supported Bookstore - Biochar

I talk with Mendocino County Librarian Mindy Kittay, about the county library system and it's future direction. We'll also talk about new library initiatives, such as a local seed library. Three upcoming community meetings in Ukiah, Willits and Ft. Bragg and will provide a forum for the public to comment about what direction the community wants the library to go in, what's working, what's not working, and what the community wants that isn't already offered. If you can't make it to the meetings (and even if you do), you can also provide feedback via an an online survey. I also invite you to call in during the program and share questions and feedback or you can email them to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

I will also talk with Christie Olson Day, owner of Gallery Bookshop in Mendocino, about the idea of a community supported bookstore, similar to a local food CSA.

And I will share some information about an upcoming workshop about making biochar as a viable alternative to agricultural burning. The new Sonoma County Biochar Project is intended to prove locally available research results from elsewhere that biochar will build soil, conserve water, improve agricultural productivity, and improve forest practices — all while replacing greenhouse gas emissions with sequestered carbon in individual farming operations. Replacing conventional open burn methods with a conservation burn can significantly reduce emissions (visible smoke and invisible chemicals and particles) from agricultural burns and conserve resources, especially carbon. This workshop will show how to produce biochar, a valuable soil amendment, in the process.
