An Advent Spiral, as offered by many Waldorf and Rudolf Steiner-inspired schools, is a meditative candle-lighting ceremony done in silence, supported and witnessed by the community.
Accompanied by soft harp music, each participant carries a small, unlit candle to the center of a spiral of evergreen boughs where at the center they may light it from a large candle at the center. Upon their returning outward journey each person sets their lit candle upon the spiral in any of the designated locations along the spiral. The ceremony is done in a darkened room, and as people take the journey, one by one, the hall slowly brightens.
The entire ceremony is done in meditative silence, held throughout the evening and even to the closing and return to people’s homes. The intention is to honor each one’s personal journey through darkness as guided by the light of spirit within. There are no speeches or sermons.
Both of the schools who are hosting this event, Waldorf School of Mendocino County and River Oak Charter School, were blessed to have had Kressa and Kai Shepherd as students. This event is in their honor, and extended to all families and friends of those who have lost homes and loved ones in the Redwood Complex fire. Information at 707-391-6836
